Feeling Tense or Guarded? This One Shift Can Create More Ease Than You Expect
Ever had one of those days where everything just feels… a bit too much? Maybe someone’s energy throws you off. Or maybe you're just tired of carrying the emotional weight of “holding it all together.”
And without realizing it, we walk around with invisible shields up—trying to protect ourselves from judgment, discomfort, or being hurt. But what if those very walls are actually keeping out the support, peace, and connection we’re asking for?
That’s where this next tool comes in.
What Are “Barriers”?
Think of 'barriers' as the invisible armor we put up when we feel unsafe, triggered, defensive, or misunderstood.
They can show up as:
• Physical tension or shallow breathing
• Emotional distance or reactivity
• Overthinking and needing to be “in control”
• That feeling of needing to guard or prove ourselves
Sometimes we build them gradually. Sometimes they go up in an instant. Either way, they block the flow of life—and we rarely even know they’re there.
The Tool: “Barriers Down”
This tool is as simple as it gets. When you notice you’re feeling tight, guarded, or resistant, gently say:
“Barriers down. Barriers down. Barriers down.”
Say it in your mind or softly out loud. Picture the walls around you softening and melting away. Let your breath deepen. Let your body relax. It’s safe to let go. You’re not making yourself weak—you’re allowing yourself to receive.
Barriers don’t just block the things we fear… They also block the very things we want. More peace? Connection? Love? Opportunities? They can’t reach you when you’re surrounded by energetic armor. Here’s something most people never think about:
Whenever we dislike, hate, or judge someone or something, we unconsciously create a barrier to everything connected to that energy.
For example: If you strongly dislike people who drink alcohol, you may unintentionally block all kinds of opportunities—friendships, clients, partnerships—that could’ve come through someone who happens to enjoy a drink.
It doesn’t mean you have to change your values or preferences. It just means that resistance creates separation. And separation limits what can flow into your life. “Barriers down” softens that. It helps you let go of the charge, the judgment, and the block—without giving up your inner knowing.
When to Use This Tool
Use it anytime you:
• Feel guarded or anxious before a conversation
• Walk into a space that feels heavy or tense
• Notice yourself judging, resisting, or emotionally shutting down
• Want to feel more open, clear, or connected in your body
It also works beautifully in meditation or just before sleep.
So, the next time you notice tension—physical, mental, or emotional—just take a pause. Close your eyes if you can. Take a breath. And quietly say:
“Barriers down. Barriers down. Barriers down.”
No effort. Just intention. Notice how you feel afterward. Even a small shift is a win.
Make it a Daily Practice
This is one of those tools that works best when you use it often - like a mental and energetic stretch. Each time you lower your barriers, you create more room for peace, clarity, and even unexpected magic. Give it a try this week. See what shifts. And if you do, I’d love to hear about your experience - drop a comment below and let’s keep the conversation open (with no barriers) :)
